Key Information About Thailand

Founder Insight
Why Thailand
I've travelled extensively throughout Thailand over the years and have spent time in each of the locations where we offer volunteer programs. One of the reasons we continue to recommend Thailand is that no two locations feel the same. Each offers a completely different experience, which is why I encourage people to think carefully about where they want to base themselves rather than simply choosing the first destination they see.
Chiang Mai offers a very different side of Thailand, with its mountain scenery, historic temples and relaxed northern culture. Hua Hin has a laid-back coastal atmosphere that's ideal if you'd like to combine volunteering with life by the beach, while Koh Samui provides a tropical island experience that's unlike anywhere else in the country.
One of the advantages of volunteering in Thailand is the flexibility. Many volunteers stay in one location and combine different projects during their visit, while others split their time between two or even all three destinations. If you'd like to experience different parts of Thailand during one trip, we're happy to help you plan an itinerary that makes that possible.
Is Thailand the Right Volunteer Destination for You?
Thailand is one of our most popular volunteer destinations, but that doesn't mean it's the right choice for everyone.
If you're looking for a remote expedition, challenging wilderness conditions or a destination that's well off the tourist trail, you may find another country is a better fit.
However, if you want a destination that combines meaningful volunteer work with welcoming local communities, excellent food, diverse landscapes and the opportunity to experience different sides of one country, Thailand is an excellent choice.
With volunteer programs in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin and Koh Samui, you can choose between northern mountains, a relaxed coastal town or tropical island life, or even combine more than one location into the same trip for a broader experience of Thailand.
You'll probably enjoy volunteering in Thailand if you...
✓ Want to experience Thailand beyond the usual tourist attractions
✓ Like the idea of living alongside local communities while volunteering
✓ Enjoy working with children, community projects, conservation or ethical elephant care
✓ Want the flexibility to choose between mountains, the coast or island life
✓ Are looking for a destination that's well suited to first-time volunteers
✓ Enjoy meeting other international volunteers while having plenty of opportunities to explore in your free time
✓ Want a well-organised volunteer experience with accommodation, meals, orientation and experienced local support included
This volunteer program may not be the best fit if you...
✕ Are looking for a luxury holiday or all-inclusive resort experience
✕ Want to spend most of your trip sightseeing rather than volunteering
✕ Prefer complete flexibility instead of following a structured volunteer schedule
✕ Aren't comfortable staying in shared volunteer accommodation
✕ Are only interested in Thailand's nightlife or party scene
✕ Expect volunteering to take place without adapting to local customs, communities and ways of working

Choose the Volunteer Program That's Right for You
No two volunteers are looking for exactly the same experience, which is why we offer a wide range of volunteer programs across three very different locations in Thailand.
You might see yourself teaching English in a local school, supporting young children in a kindergarten, helping with community construction projects, working on environmental conservation, coaching sports, or spending time at an ethical elephant sanctuary. If you'd like to experience Thai culture before volunteering, you can also begin with a one-week Culture Week.
Our volunteer programs are based in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin and Koh Samui, each offering its own lifestyle and atmosphere. Whether you prefer the mountains of northern Thailand, a relaxed coastal town or tropical island living, you can choose the location that best suits your interests—or even combine multiple locations and projects into one trip.
Whichever program you choose, you'll receive the same personalised guidance from Abroad Escape before you travel, while our trusted local partner will provide your accommodation, orientation, project placement and ongoing in-country support throughout your volunteer experience.

You'll observe and assist with daily care routines while learning about elephant welfare, behaviour, and conservation. The experience is designed to prioritise the wellbeing of the elephants while giving volunteers a meaningful insight into responsible wildlife care.

Discover the Different Sides of Thailand
One of the best things about volunteering in Thailand is that there's no single "Thai experience."
Each of our locations offers something completely different, allowing you to choose the setting that suits your interests—or even combine multiple destinations during one trip.
Chiang Mai is the cultural heart of northern Thailand, surrounded by mountains, ancient temples and a slower pace of life. It's ideal if you'd like to experience traditional Thai culture while volunteering in local communities.
Hua Hin offers a more relaxed coastal atmosphere. Known for its long beaches, local markets and laid-back lifestyle, it's a great choice if you'd like to balance your volunteer work with time by the sea.
Koh Samui provides a tropical island experience, with palm-fringed beaches, warm waters and a welcoming local community. It's perfect for volunteers who'd like to combine meaningful projects with island living.
More Than One Destination
Many volunteers choose to stay in a single location for their entire trip, but that's not your only option.
Because our volunteer programs operate in multiple parts of Thailand, it's possible to combine different projects, different locations, or both. You might begin in Chiang Mai before heading south to Hua Hin or Koh Samui, giving you the opportunity to experience several very different regions of the country in one journey.
If you're unsure which location is right for you, we'll happily help you compare the options and recommend an itinerary based on your interests, available time and the type of volunteer experience you're looking for.
our Free Time
Volunteering is only part of your experience in Thailand.
Evenings and weekends give you plenty of opportunities to explore your surroundings, visit temples, relax on the beach, discover local markets, sample Thailand's incredible food, or travel further afield. Whether you're hiking in the mountains around Chiang Mai, enjoying the coastline in Hua Hin or exploring nearby islands from Koh Samui, you'll have plenty of opportunities to experience Thailand beyond your volunteer project.
