Become a sports coach in Tanzania and introduce new sports activities and techniques that promote a healthy lifestyle to local kids.

You will coach children between the ages of 7-12 years in order to help them develop their social, physical and mental skills through sports and play. The children of Monduli in the region of Arusha, Tanzania will learn valuable team building skills, fresh and brand new sports skills and a sense of discipline, that will assist them greatly throughout their lives as well as developing also your sports coaching skills.

Sports are an integral part of human life and there is a great importance of sports in all spheres of life. Clearly, sports can help anyone reach fitness goals and maintain a healthy weight. It also prevents people, especially the youth, from engaging in different vices such as smoking and drinking alcohol. Instead, it helps them build their character and personality as a person, and in the long run will make them advocates in the field of sports. In fact, research shows that children who play sports probably perform better at exams than those who don’t because engaging in sports activities improves the thinking abilities of individuals.

On the other hand, Tanzania advocated and invested much in sports. This is because this is a country with people with great passion for all sports in the world. Thus, this sports coach program is designed for passionate individuals like you who would like to join a worthwhile project to teach the children at school the value and power of sports. You will have students of various age groups ranging from 6 -12 years old and various levels of skills, who will be ready to learn, play and be part of your sports coaching journey. Moreover, your skills as their coach will help these children of Monduli in having a great sports learning experience and hone their skills and passion for sport as well. Additionally, the coaching session will take place at the district’s government owned –  Local schools.

In this program, you will have daily coaching sessions with an approximate five (5) hours a day where you will be able to use your own methods of sports training. With your coaching, you will not only enhance their skills in sports but also you will inspire them to achieve more  in life, to be disciplined and even how to face failures and learn from them. It will also be a life lesson for the kids who do not have much but in the future who would strive to achieve greatness for sure. Similarly, with this program, we are aiming to broaden the social and athletic skills that these children have through participation in sport activities. These new skills and lessons will foster the development of important life skills.

The coaching sessions should be both technical and practical. Your coordinator will share ideas, but you are expected to bring a go-to attitude and lead your group with drills, ideas and fitness exercises. Keep also in mind that equipment may be limited and not exactly what you may be used to, so you may need to be resourceful and creative!

This program includes Coaching options on the most famous and popular sports in Tanzania that includes Football, Basketball, Rugby, Athletics and Cricket.

So get ready, bring your passion, full energy with you and gear up and make these children’s dreams come true.You can also feel free to bring any sort of equipment or training aids, that will assist with your coaching experience, as equipment may be limited in some placement areas.

Generally, as a sports coach your major roles and core functions will be, but are not limited to: teaching relevant skills,  tactics and techniques, introduced a basic rules and regulation of the each sports,  organized game plans and matching events,  monitoring and enhancing performances through encouragement, motivation and constructive feedback, identifying the children sports development needs, strengths and weaknesses, advising health and lifestyles issues and to be part of their journey towards future success.

In each sport you may consider imparting some basic skills and techniques that will surely help honing the skills and potentials of the young athletes of Monduli. Just keep in mind that they are just starting and you may need to start at the very basic and beginning.

Football – While there are no official national sports in Tanzania, the unofficial national sports is the most popular one; football/soccer.As has been mentioned a couple of times, soccer is quite popular among Tanzanian youth and children and most of the people are quite dedicated to the sports. In this, you need to put an extra effort as this sport requires so much energy.  You will be teaching children who love football, accompanied with some football knowledge and/or experience, and team management skills will be needed.

Basketball – It is also played in the country but mainly in the army and school. Pass your knowledge of dribbling, offense, defense, jump shots and team work to local players eager to learn the fundamentals of the game. Your coaching will help young athletes/children in the local community / school to improve their game and train them to be stronger in every aspect. You may even get to share your knowledge during practice sessions, and scheduled games, alongside local coaches for organized competitive events.

Cricket – This sport is a rapidly growing sport in the country after hosting the ICC Cricket League Division 4 in 2008 where the national team finished the tournament with a win. Meanwhile, this sport requires batting skills, thus, the player must possess good hand eye – coordination, reflexes, strength, running speed, sound judgment and of course knowledge of cricket rules and an understanding of cricket strategy and tactics. Therefore, you may focus on that and impart your skills to the best of abilities that you have.

Rugby – This sport served as a minor sport in Tanzania. Being said,  you will need to teach the fundamentals of the sport, emphasize rules and strategies, etc., because very few may be familiar with the sport at all.

Baseball – Tanzania baseball has been played frequently by a number of secondary Schools in the country and the participating number of students keeps on increasing. This sport requires five key skills such as running, fielding, throwing, hitting, catching and hitting for power. Thus, this is where your assignment started.

Athletics – Tanzania is known for their runners. This country is also a powerhouse in the Commonwealth Games and the African Championships in Athletics. Thus, Help the children to increase their speed, stamina, strength and skill. Many of them have dreams of representing their country on the world stage at the Olympics or other World Championships where two of their fellow countrymen bring honor to their country.

On the other hand,  this is a great reminder for you that you are exploring this beautiful community of Monduli away from the comfort of your own home, thus, making a difference in the lives of the children is greatly appreciated.

However, to make your journey meaningful, safe and sound you are expected to adhere and follow all the stated rules and regulations set. Also to keep in mind various considerations in taking the program, thus, failure to comply may lead to your termination from the program. Again, this is for however implemented and advised for your utmost safety while staying with us.

During the Sports Coaching Training:

• Be on time and always come to your assigned training or coaching sessions prepared.
• There may be a change of time and schedules so please be patient and respect the advice of your local program coordinator.
• Work closely with your local program coordinator.
• Be respectful with the local staff, the local people, fellow participants,local teachers at school and to the community in general at all times.

• Smile and have a lot of patience as you are working with children with various age groups and sports skills and styles.

• Tree Nursery Tasks: Assisting with tasks in the tree nursery, such as seedling preparation, nurturing young trees, and ensuring their healthy growth, will be part of your responsibilities. These efforts are critical in maintaining a sustainable supply of trees for future planting initiatives.
• Educational Engagement: You’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with a local school’s environmental clubs. Through classes and interactive sessions, you’ll impart valuable knowledge about environmental conservation, sustainable practices, and the importance of preserving nature. You Could:

In your role, you will join forces with local staff members and educators as you assist them in effectively managing their classes. This impactful project is dedicated to supporting schools in and around the Monduli area by rejuvenating their infrastructure and creating an environment conducive to optimal learning experiences. As part of this initiative, we also provide essential learning facilities wherever they are needed. Our efforts encompass a wide range of projects, including renovating libraries, revitalizing playgrounds, repairing school furniture, and lending a helping hand wherever it’s needed.

By actively participating in this social project, you have the power to make a profound difference in the local community by directly supporting the students in these schools.

Your work may involve tasks where you will be able to help create a positive learning environment in the school. The project involves hard physical and manual labor, as you could be laying bricks, doing carpentry, painting, laying tiles, and landscaping/gardening. We may also be involved in renovating buildings, painting, repairing the furniture, fixing equipment and so on.

The other side of this project involves a more artistic and relaxed environment. You may also get a chance to use your creative ideas to beautify the school surroundings. You will work alongside a local coordinator and a foreman who provides guidance. This activity is fun supporting the initiative and creativity during the process.

It is one thing to learn about Maasai culture; why not become a part of it? This is your opportunity to benefit from the experience of being and doing. You can see the Maasai way of life up close and participate in the many activities that they do on a daily basis.

You will be welcome to stay in their village, learn about their culture, and participate in their daily tasks during this Maasai Village Homestay. Men are usually in charge of caring for and selling the tribe’s cattle, while women help with milking, cooking, finding firewood, caring for babies, and even building the boma houses. There will be numerous opportunities to learn more about Maasai culture through interaction and communication, as well as exchanges of ideas and experiences. You will also have the opportunity to learn beadwork from the village women, how to make Maasai sandals from the men, teach the village children some basic English, and/or teach/play sports with them.

The Maasai are proud people who do their best to preserve their unique culture, and yes, different tribes in Africa can have very distinct characteristics and customs! They are quite possibly one of the most emblematic tribes in East Africa. With a Nilotic ethnic background, they live in the northern Tanzanian and southern Kenya regions. The Maasai are known for their nomadic lifestyle (although, since the ’90s, the Tanzanian government passed a bill in which they were forced to settle in a single place), their colorful dress code, their beaded jewelry, and their awe-inspiring traditions.

The Maasai people have a very traditional way of living, with most relatives all living in the same family compound, which is traditionally known as a boma. They were nomadic people, as traditionally the Maasai would move with their cattle from one grazing place to another. Today, these animals are still how they earn their income. Through the sale of their cattle and cattle products, they would make just enough money to survive and move on. Interestingly, the NGO, Oxfam, claims that the lifestyle of the Maasai should be embraced as a response to climate change because of their ability to farm in deserts and scrublands.

Westerners may find Maasai culture to be very different. Men, for example, can marry several women depending on their wealth; this status is usually determined by how many cattle they own, and there are financial reasons for a Maasai family to have many wives, as a larger family allows more hands to care for their cattle, cows, goats, sheep, and donkeys.

On Monday, the first day of your program, you will participate in an orientation day held in Monduli. Tuesday

The Maasai are a herding tribe well known for their traditions. Today will be spent grazing the livestock! You will accompany a Maasai warrior on his grazing activities through the bush – be prepared to walk for several hours!

During the dry season (June to October), this activity requires even more effort: the nearest river to the village becomes completely dry, forcing the villagers to walk further or dig holes to reach underground water so their livestock can drink. – don’t be surprised if you are invited to participate!

Wednesday

We will join the women of a boma in their traditional activities early in the morning. You can expect to participate in activities such as milking cows and walking donkeys to the river to fetch water.

After lunch, we will participate in an exciting workshop where you will learn how to make beautiful beaded Maasai jewelry, the kind that has made the Maasai such an iconic and colorful tribe.

The day will conclude with a cooking class led by one of our hosts. Take note, because this will be your dinner!

Thursday

Today is yet another day to feed the livestock! Grazing days are filled with adventure as they involve long walks through the African bush.

Friday

We will hike through the African wilderness once more! After a few hours of daring exploration, we will have a picnic with a view of the valley.

In the evening, we will have a bonfire where you will be able to hear legends about the Maasai and other village stories.

Maasai society has its own lifestyle which differs from other societies in Tanzania. They have their own dressing styles, decorations, and way of living. They wear the rectangular fabric popularly known as Shuka in the Swahili language which comes in different colors. The majority of Maasai women throughout the many Maasai communities live a life of poverty and cultural oppression. Men are the heads of the households and the village. They have control of almost every aspect of life and hold almost all the leadership roles.

Moreover, Maasai women’s main source of income is through selling traditional beaded jewelry. However, due to their vulnerability in lack of education, women do not have a systematic way of financially protecting their own economic interests. In this regard, here is where you can support the Maasai women through a mutually beneficial exchange of information in making informed financial decisions.

In essence, most of the women from Maasai tribes devote their time to milking, taking care of calves, and domestic work. This kind of labor is currently the priority allowed for women as there is less emphasis on education and community engagement which might allow women to have more options for sustainable development in the future.

The majority of the women in the village do not speak English, as such, you will be supervised on the ground by a locally trained coordinator to ensure there is smooth communication between the women and yourself. The main goal is to facilitate Maasai women with a view to preparing the future that will guide them to have fruitful life into their old age.

Due to the remote location of this program and limited local transportation, you may be required to stay the first night in Monduli. Additionally, placement is in a Maasai village in Arusha, but to increase immersion you may get spread across various villages.

Explore the local Mwenge Woodmarket, bring home a Tinga Tinga painting, and buy well-cut and certified tanzanite from a charming boutique store. You can also go to Kaole Ruins and do cycling and port tours. Finally, during your island day, you will have the entire day to relax on the beach. Similarly, knowing English well helps everyone have more opportunities in life, especially in their careers, and learning the language should begin at a young age. As a result, a first step is for you to assist local teachers in teaching English to children of all ages at a government-owned primary school in a fun and practical manner, as well as to give something back to this beautiful city of Dar es Salaam. Aside from that, you may find yourself teaching students other subjects or skill sets, such as science or mathematics, and especially motivating them to be better people through character formation and development.

English subjects are taught in schools, but we have noticed that the children in the community/village do not have much opportunity to learn or practice using it – and this is where your teaching assistance journey begins.

Furthermore, this teaching assistance program is structured as an informal English class, allowing you to plan a variety of activities such as music, songs, playing games, arts, sports, conversation exercises, and grammar exercises. Be creative, but remember that everything should be based on teaching practical English for everyday situations in a fun and engaging way!

Furthermore, you will attend classes on a regular basis and interact with students as much as possible throughout the day. You will be able to spend your free time with the friends you make during your stay in the evenings and on weekends. Finally, an important component of this program is the cultural exchange that will occur. The students at the school are always very interested and keen to learn more about your family, country, culture, and way of life. Therefore, we highly encourage you to bring a lot of pictures from home, as they will be very much appreciated by them.

Don’t worry about not having special qualifications. The whole idea of this community engagement project is to provide any help possible, whether it is merely enabling children to hear English pronunciation by native English speakers or any additional help with their character development.

Spend your time and extend a helping hand as you look after kids in preschool at a local government-owned primary school in Tanzania.

Engage yourself in meaningful learning activities with those kids, such as playing games, singing songs, creating meaningful arts and drawings, dancing, and teaching basic English. As you feed, play with, and provide one-on-one attention to the young children in attendance, you will also assist the dedicated local teaching staff with daily tasks.

Children reach milestones in how they play, learn, speak, behave, and move. Additionally, skills such as naming colors, showing affection, singing songs and even dancing are called development milestones. In fact, children ages 3 – 5 years serve as the crucial points of their development, thus, it is a perfect time for you to grab this opportunity and a chance to be part of these children’s most important point of their developmental milestone.

To begin with, you will spend your time and extend a helping hand as you look after kids in pre-school at a local government-owned primary school in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. In fact, this school can really use your help with the day-to-day activities and tasks required to service, care for and to teach local children from ages 3 to 5 years old. What’s a good thing is that you will also work hand in hand at a well-organized and nicely run government-owned school and assist the teaching staff in the teaching-learning process.

Correspondingly, set your full energy and patience high as you engage with children with different learning needs and styles. Thus, your primary tasks include teaching basic English and helping them practice writing on their pads. You can even use other creative and fun ways to help them learn basic tasks through drawing, paintings, arts, songs, dances or games.  If the weather is quite good, some of these activities may take place outside, so children have space to run and play.

Besides teaching, you will also support the teaching staff with the caretaking of the children. This task can range from organizing classes, playing games and guiding activities to feeding, cutting nails, combing hair and so on.

Lastly, nowadays, English is one of the most popular languages all over the globe. In Tanzania, English also plays an important role in people’s lives because this country is in the stage of further development, globalization and the tourism industry is growing. Assist in the healthcare of the residents in one of the beautiful communities in Tanzania.

This program is specially designed and aimed at those who have a medical background and want to experience and learn about different healthcare systems and practices in other countries. However, your role will be based on your level of experience and field of expertise. Finally, this program is set in a village community and local schools in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where access to quality health care is limited.

Tanzania’s first and foremost concern is to eradicate public health problems through various healthcare programs. However, a recent report estimates that the country is not only facing an estimated 56% of health care staff shortages but they are also unevenly distributed and do not have time to educate communities, especially children due to long hours and demand for their work. Thus, you can make a meaningful stay as you help the community in their health conditions and to educate children at school about the importance of taking care of everyone’s health.

In addition, this healthcare education initiative is in its infancy and requires the skills of both established medical and healthcare professionals and those who have the heart in teaching basic first-aid and personal hygiene.

This need for having project participants on either end of the medical spectrum arises due to the great extremes in hygiene and health practices. Apart from needing qualified professionals in order to conduct health camps and dental checkups, we also need participants who can educate people in the areas of basic first-aid and personal hygiene such as washing hands, brushing teeth and general cleanliness. This works towards the prevention of many avoidable health problems and easily communicable diseases.

If you are interested in education and simple hygiene techniques, you are welcome to join the newly established Healthcare Education project here in Madale, Dar es Salaam City. Medical professionals who can offer guidance on the project’s development would be immensely valuable, however, it is not imperative that participants have a medical background to join.

As a participant in this project, you can support running healthcare campaigns in local schools and the local community in Dar es Salaam and actively teach the importance of basic hygiene – emphasizing brushing teeth correctly, washing hands and general body cleanliness. You will also be able to work closely with local medical officers and health clinic doctors which will add an immense value to your experience.

Meanwhile, we encourage you to prepare work and lessons before your arrival with main topics on sanitation and hygiene, body health, basic first aid and many more. Please also keep in mind that you will be teaching in schools with limited resources, so you will need to be more creative.

If standing up for women is one of your purposes in life, then our Empowering Village Women project in Tanzania is designed especially for you! Help us work towards a better future for Tanzanian women by joining this meaningful project away from the comfort of your home.

You’ll get to work and create a strong bond with underprivileged village women around Madale, Dar es Salaam City, and will provide them with a variety of activities and training sessions in batik and handicraft making that will surely contribute to their daily endeavors. Further, building a better future for them.

Life in Madale Village, Dar es Salaam City, is difficult for women. Despite its city location, half of the population lives below the poverty line. According to a 2019 Tanzanian survey, women are nearly twice as likely as men to have no education and are less likely to own land, have access to bank accounts, or have a decently paid job. Furthermore, most of the women in the village stay at home, caring for their children and doing household chores. This scenario implies that most women in the village do not have other sources of income to support their daily needs, but are instead dependent on the income of their husbands and lose the opportunity to succeed in life.

Women, on the other hand, were the primary caregivers for children and the elderly throughout the world. Similarly, a Tanzanian college professor once said, “When you educate and empower a woman, you educate and empower an entire community.” As a result, this project was created to address the fact that women are far less likely than men to leave their villages due to poverty and family ties, and to empower them to create a better future for themselves and their families. You will assist these women in reaching their full potential, sharing your expertise and knowledge, and encouraging them to improve their futures alongside their families. You will assist in the development of those women’s skill sets, including Batik and handicraft making, as a source of income.

Furthermore, because the village is a popular destination for local and international tourists, this program hopes to support the development and establishment of a network of village women in small businesses based on the use of their local and natural resources, such as batik and hand crafts, in the long run.

Moreover, this project runs year – round and you can join anytime of the year with a maximum of one week. However, we always recommend you to stay as long as you could as it will give you more time and more opportunities to get along with these women and ultimately see them put their training into actual practice and harvest the fruits of their labor.

Furthermore, during the span of the said program, inter – cultural exchange may occur. This means that the village women will learn from you, and you will also learn from them. Thus, this program is ideal for you if you have a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged women in society, making a historical impact on their lives and the local community in general.

Handcrafted batik is created by painting or stamping desired patterns in hot liquid wax onto cotton fabric. The fabric is then dipped in a fabric dye, which adheres to all of the areas where the wax has not been applied. The wax is removed (washed out with hot water) during handling and dyeing, revealing the first pattern. The process of painting, stamping, and dyeing can be repeated with different patterns and colors to create beautiful fabrics.

The technique is simple but time consuming, and the special beauty and uniqueness of the design are, of course, dependent on the artisan’s creative input.

In Tanzania, batiks with tribal and wildlife designs are popular with tourists. They are timeless. Also, for garments, they can be used, but in many cases, the fabric is quite stiff, so the design has to be suitable for the fabrics.

Meanwhile, no prior experience or qualification is required to participate in this program because we will provide you with expertise on the subject. However, your own skills, field of expertise, and knowledge are appreciated as long as they will help these women build themselves. You will be assisting these women in a variety of activities to empower them in Batik and handicraft making, such as gathering materials and setting up work spaces, cutting fabrics, applying the first layers of wax, dyeing or stamping, and many more.

On the other hand, while immersing yourself in foreign places away from your own home, your safety is our first priority. As a result, you are expected to adhere to and follow all of the center’s stated rules and regulations; failure to do so may result in your termination from the program. Again, this is implemented and recommended for your safety while staying with us.

You will have a great time teaching the children of Madale, Dar es Salaam, about music appreciation, the arts, and various instruments. Inspire young musicians and artists to discover their potential as future musicians and artists, and assist them in developing a deep love for music and the arts.

Music and the arts are essential parts of the education of a well-rounded individual. Especially for young children. It is one of the arts that balances the study of science and the humanities to provide children with a creative outlet while also exposing them to other areas of learning. Thus, the program aims to improve the musical and artistic abilities of Dar es Salaam’s village children. City, Tanzania—This is where your career as a music and arts educator begins!

Teaching music and the arts, on the other hand, is not always easy. These local kids may have varying levels of prior musical knowledge and willingness to participate, or they may be new to this type of art and platform. You must be more creative and devise new strategies to help them learn music and the arts in an easy and enjoyable manner, while also making the most of your abilities as their music and arts teacher/mentor for a set period of time. Furthermore, your own skills, area of expertise, and knowledge of music, as well as your ability to play a variety of musical instruments, are valued.

Meanwhile, to ensure the success of this project, we encourage you to design and prepare lesson plans prior to your arrival. This is due to the fact that one of the first things you must consider as a music teacher is how you plan your lessons. To begin, you may need to create a map of the various units you will be covering during your placement. Consider the following general domains of musical knowledge as you plan: musical theory and literacy, music history and culture, instrumental and vocal performances, and an appreciation for pitch, rhythm, dynamics, form, and timbre.

Furthermore, the best way to keep the kids learning is to provide them with a variety of activities at all times. Keep in mind that some of them may be completely new to the world of music, the arts, and even playing instruments, as they are in the process of developing an interest in this type of platform. This means that as you plan each unit of teaching sessions, you may  build as many opportunities as possible for the kids to be active and work with all of their bodies and minds, including:

• Have local kids listen to music instead of listening to them;
• Have the kids play with a variety of instruments;
• Have the kids watch videos of musicians from different cultures ;
• Show pictures of musicians as they listen to works;
• Provide the kids with lots of opportunities to sing and dance. Ideally, it will benefit the kids by giving them opportunities to perform;
• Draw their creativity in doing art; and
• Let them express their inner selves and emotions through arts and music.

Dar es Salaam is Tanzania’s largest and busiest city. It is the country’s most important business and commercial hub and is situated right on the Indian Ocean.It is also the main port of call for most visitors, as it is an ideal place from which to access both wilderness and beaches of Tanzania and Zanzibar. In addition, a growing tourism industry is undeniable. However, several communal areas in this city are many years old and need some serious improvement – and that’s where your assignment and construction skills and efforts are much needed.

To begin with, our Construction and renovation project takes place in the very heart of this city. Like many other places in Tanzania, there are some areas and communal infrastructures that need to be done, constructed and renovated. Meanwhile, on this project, you will get your hands dirty with construction and renovation assignments. Our main construction focus is working at the local schools, which has been allocated as an education resource for the children from the surrounding villages. You can further look forward to working out in the local community in constructing and renovating community centers and public spaces, mosques and helping the locals build and renovate new homes!

These efforts aim to provide a safe, quality and conducive learning environment for children, safe community centers to conduct historic events and for Tanzanian people to have a comfortable home and many more. In fact, construction and renovation is vital in creating buildings and safe spaces that connect communities, creating jobs and improving the standard of the society – so thus these efforts in support further to the growing tourism and economic activities.

Finally, with the guidance of local program coordinator and experts in the matter, we expect you to assist in the efforts of renovating, painting and building on different infrastructures to improve the quality of life of the locals and the community as a whole. Similarly, what you can expect from your efforts is to be directing and implementing your construction skills wherever they are needed most!
