Bali Volunteer Teaching
1-8 weeks | Join from only €525
The Bali Volunteer Teaching program allows you to volunteer for 1-8 weeks in Ubud, assisting with kindergarten or English teaching. Starting at €525, the program includes accommodation, meals, and local support, making it an excellent opportunity for those looking to engage with the local community while making a difference.

Joining the Bali Volunteer Teaching program offers a unique chance to immerse yourself in the local culture while positively impacting children's lives. Volunteers can choose between teaching in kindergartens or primary schools, where they help children develop confidence in English through engaging activities rather than traditional classroom teaching. This approach fosters a more interactive and enjoyable learning environment.
The program caters to individuals aged 18 and over, and no prior teaching experience is required. A positive attitude and a willingness to engage with children are key. This opportunity not only enhances your teaching skills but also allows you to build meaningful connections with the local community in Ubud.
What age groups can you teach in Bali?
In the Bali Volunteer Teaching program, you can teach children aged 4 to 18, focusing on early childhood education in kindergartens and English language skills in primary and secondary schools.
The age range of students you will be working with varies based on your placement. In kindergartens, you'll assist children aged 4 to 6, preparing them for primary school through play and English immersion. This exposure to the English language at an early age can significantly enhance their future educational opportunities.
For those interested in teaching English, the program provides placements in local elementary and high schools, where you can engage with older students. Teaching this age group allows for more complex interactions and the chance to facilitate discussions and projects that encourage real-world English application.
Why is the Culture Week recommended?
The Culture Week is highly recommended for volunteers in Bali as it helps them acclimate to local customs, language, and traditions, fostering a smoother transition into their teaching roles.
Starting with the Culture Week is an effective way for volunteers to adapt to the cultural differences they will encounter in Bali. During this week, participants learn the basics of local life, including language, daily routines, and customs that help bridge the gap between tourists and locals. The activities planned during this week include visits to sacred temples, market tours, and cultural classes, all designed to enhance your understanding of Balinese society.
Volunteers who participate in the Culture Week often report feeling more confident and prepared for their teaching roles. They not only gain valuable insights into the culture but also make connections with fellow volunteers, creating a supportive community that enhances their overall experience in Bali.
What is included in the program?
The Bali Volunteer Teaching program includes accommodation, meals, 24/7 local support, and optional activities during the Culture Week to enhance your experience.
When you sign up for the Bali Volunteer Teaching program, you receive comprehensive support throughout your stay. Accommodation is typically provided in shared volunteer houses, where you can bond with fellow participants. Meals are included, which allows you to enjoy local cuisine without the added stress of cooking.
Additionally, the program offers 24/7 local support, ensuring that you have access to assistance whenever needed. This is particularly beneficial for first-time volunteers who may have questions or concerns during their stay. The optional activities during the Culture Week are an excellent way to delve deeper into local traditions and practices, making your overall experience richer and more memorable.
What is the daily schedule like for volunteers?
Volunteers typically work in the mornings, assisting with teaching and engaging in lesson planning in the afternoons, followed by communal dinners to share experiences and connect with other volunteers.
The daily schedule for volunteers is designed to provide a balanced mix of hands-on teaching and preparation time. Most mornings start early with breakfast before heading to the kindergarten or school. Depending on your placement, you will assist local teachers in delivering engaging lessons and activities that promote English language learning.
After lunch, volunteers often use their afternoons to plan for the next day's activities, ensuring that they are well-prepared and can deliver the best possible learning experience for the children. Evenings typically conclude with communal dinners, allowing everyone to share their experiences and build camaraderie among the group.
What is the role of a volunteer in the classroom?
Volunteers in the classroom serve to assist local teachers, providing energy and support, while facilitating engaging learning experiences through games and interactive activities.
Your role in the classroom primarily revolves around assisting local teachers in kindergartens and primary schools. This involves helping to create an engaging atmosphere where children can learn English through play, games, and creative activities rather than traditional rote learning.
By bringing energy and enthusiasm to the classroom, you can significantly enhance the children's learning experience. The focus is on building their confidence in English communication through interactive methods, making the process enjoyable and effective. Your involvement not only helps the students but also allows you to gain valuable insights into the local education system and teaching methods.
Where will you be based during your volunteer experience?
You will be based in Ubud, Bali's cultural hub, which offers a vibrant community atmosphere and easy access to local attractions.
Ubud is known as the cultural heart of Bali, making it an ideal location for volunteers. The town is rich in art, culture, and tradition, providing numerous opportunities to explore Balinese heritage. During your stay, you'll have easy access to local markets, temples, and natural attractions such as rice terraces and waterfalls.
The community atmosphere in Ubud is welcoming and supportive, which is beneficial for first-time volunteers. This location also allows for weekend excursions to other parts of Bali, giving you the chance to experience the island's diverse landscapes and cultures during your downtime.

Bali Culture Week
The Recommended Way to Start
Most volunteers arrive in Bali feeling a mix of excitement and "culture shock." The heat, the pace, and the customs are often very different from home. We strongly recommend starting your journey with our Culture Week in Ubud.
This is a social, low-pressure introduction designed to turn "tourists" into "team members". Instead of diving straight into a project, you’ll spend your first five days:
- Exploring Hidden Bali: Visit sacred temples and local markets with our coordinators.
- Cultural Immersion: Take classes in basic Bahasa Indonesian and traditional Balinese dance or batik painting.
- Daily Life Skills: Learn how to navigate local transport, understand temple etiquette, and master the "dos and don’ts" of Balinese society.
While it is 100% your choice to skip this and go straight into a project on week one, we find that volunteers who take the Culture Week hit the ground running. You’ll start your actual project with more confidence, a deeper understanding of the people you are helping, and a established group of new friends to spend your weekends with.
The Bali Culture Week
Master the essentials of Balinese life while building a community of fellow volunteers.
You’ll spend the week exploring how culture, religion, art, and daily routines are connected in Bali. Activities include Balinese language lessons, batik painting, cooking classes, temple visits, traditional dance performances, and creating flower offerings. A spiritual visit to Tirta Empul Temple for a holy water blessing is also included.
We're not just showing you Bali. We're getting you inside it. You'll leave knowing the language basics, understanding the traditions, and having actually experienced what makes this culture so special.

Kindergarten (Ubud)
Spark a love for learning in Bali’s youngest students through play and English immersion.
You will assist local teachers in community-run kindergartens, helping children aged 4 to 6 prepare for primary school. Your role is to provide the energy and extra hands that make a classroom thrive, focusing on creative engagement and early language skills.
These children are just starting their school journey, and giving them some early English exposure, can genuinely change their opportunities in life.
You'll be playing games, singing, drawing, painting, maybe heading outside when the weather's good. The kids want to play with you, and that's exactly how they learn best at this age. Bring your energy and patience because every kid learns differently.
You'll also help the teachers with day-to-day stuff – organizing activities, playing games, sometimes practical things like helping at meal times or getting them ready for the day.
Schedule
Monday to Friday
Typically, you will be working at the kindergarten in the morning hours.
After lunch, you will have time to plan and organize activities for the next day.
On a typical day during the project, you will have an early morning breakfast and leave to work at the kindergarten where you will teach some basic English phrases for little kids, play some games, etc.
Then, once you have lunch in the afternoon, you will start planning the activities for the next day at kindergarten.
The day would end after having a delicious dinner at the accommodation.
Please note that the Kindergarten Project will be closed during school break (June, July, August and December).
* The schedule can be changed as per local conditions and unforeseen circumstances
English Teaching (Ubud)
Work alongside local staff to deliver interactive English lessons in community schools. By using games, music, and art, you help children move past textbook learning and into real-world communication, providing them with a vital tool for their future careers.
You’ll teach in local elementary or high schools, either independently or with other participants. A general syllabus is provided, but you can adapt lessons to your style and the students’ needs.
These kids are genuinely excited to learn, which makes teaching them pretty incredible. There's a general syllabus to follow and examples from past participants, but you've got freedom to decide what and how you teach. Make it fun – use games, songs, art, sports, music, whatever gets them engaged.
Your job is to show them that learning English doesn't have to be boring. Get creative with it. If you're nervous about teaching, pair up with other participants. Having two or three teachers in the classroom actually works really well, especially when the kids' enthusiasm turns into full-on excitement.
Bring your energy, patience, and creativity. If you genuinely care about making a difference for these kids, they'll feel it. And honestly, you'll probably learn just as much from them as they learn from you.
Schedule
Monday
On Monday after early morning breakfast, the lesson plans are drawn. This will consist of preparing lessons which could be on various educational subjects or something you would like to teach the children.
After lunch, you would set out to the local school and teach them the lessons which you are already prepared with. Later in the evening, return back to the center to give us your feedback on your first day of teaching.
Tuesday to Friday
From Tuesday to Friday, after you complete your early morning breakfast, you can work on developing lesson plans for each day for a couple of hours.
After lunch, you can then leave to your assigned school to work with the students who will be eagerly waiting for you.
Once you teach them the lessons you have prepared for them and engage in a few activities, then you can return to your accommodation and have dinner.
Your participation would require around 5 hours a day of your time; 2 hours preparing the lesson in the morning and 3 hours teaching in the afternoon.
