Volunteer Abroad & Internships
Welcome to our website! Abroad Escape has been around since the very beginning of volunteer abroad travel. We started off as a GapXperience in 2006. After Covid we started up again, first as Beyond Volunteer and then finally as Abroad Escape. Our founders have been organizing volunteer abroad programs for 20 years And during that time we have established a very close partnership with our on-the-ground partner, the Green Lion.
Our programs are for first-time travelers, solo travelers, students, gap year travelers, professionals and adults. who want a meaningful and immersive experience abroad.
Our programs are available in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. including teaching English, child care, community support, conservation, construction, health care internships and cultural immersion programs.
Unlike other volunteer placement companies who work with different partners, we have established a very close relationship and partnership with the Green Lion, because we believe they are the best provider of quality and safe volunteering and internship programs. volunteering around the world.
Unlike other companies, we do not switch partners. This happens a lot because other companies might get a better deal from partners who provide less quality support and accommodation. We focus on offering the best quality program, with the best support, top notch accommodation, and a team of local well trained helpful and friendly coordinators (these are people we know personally and have been working with for years).
That's why we believe that you should consider us if you want to have a meaningful experience abroad. 🙂
Our trips bring together cultural immersion, worthwhile volunteering, realistic expectations and real local support.
Through our partnership with The Green Lion, Abroad Escape travellers join programs connected to real, measurable project work. The Green Lion Impact Report highlights impact achieved by The Green Lion together with its wider partner network, including trusted partners like Abroad Escape.
In the Philippines, Green Lion-supported conservation work helped plant 50,036 mangrove seedlings, restoring more than 32,000 square metres of coastline and strengthening the livelihoods of 4,500 people.
In South Korea, the Seoul Soup Kitchen project supported 48,400 people facing homelessness, with 67 volunteers helping prepare and serve meals in a dedicated community facility.

Questions Before You Choose
Is Abroad Escape suitable for first-time travellers?
Yes. Abroad Escape is suitable for many first-time solo travellers, students and gap year travellers. The key is choosing a program with the right level of structure, local support, accommodation, arrival help and realistic expectations before you book.
Who supports travellers locally?
The in-country experience is delivered by local program teams and operating partners, including The Green Lion where listed. Abroad Escape helps before departure with program guidance, planning, proposal support and booking steps.
What is usually included in a volunteer abroad program?
Many supported volunteer abroad programs include accommodation, meals, airport pickup, orientation, project placement, local coordinators and in-country support where listed. Exact inclusions depend on the destination and program, so these should always be checked before booking.
What is usually not included?
Flights, travel insurance, visas, personal spending money, optional tours and some local extras are normally arranged separately unless the program page clearly says otherwise.
Can parents contact Abroad Escape before booking?
Yes. Parents can ask about the program setup, local support, accommodation, meals, airport pickup where included, payment steps, safety considerations and what still needs confirming before a traveller applies.
Is volunteering abroad safe?
No international trip is completely risk-free. The better question is whether the program has a clear local setup, arrival support, accommodation details, orientation, local contacts and realistic expectations. Abroad Escape helps travellers and parents check these points before booking.
Do I need experience to volunteer abroad?
Most volunteer programs are suitable for beginners, especially teaching support, community work, conservation, animal care, culture weeks and general project support. Internships, medical exposure and specialist placements may require relevant study, background, training or approval.
Is Abroad Escape the same as The Green Lion?
No. Abroad Escape helps travellers choose, plan and book suitable volunteer abroad programs and internships. The Green Lion is the local operating partner for many listed programs. Travellers and parents should understand who helps before departure and who supports the program in the destination.
How should I choose between volunteering abroad and an internship abroad?
Choose volunteering if you want structured project work, cultural immersion and local community involvement. Choose an internship if you need practical exposure connected to your studies, training or career goals.
