Where You'll Be Based

All Cape Verde programs are based in Tarrafal, a coastal town in the northern part of Santiago Island. Tarrafal is known for its laid-back atmosphere, beaches, and authentic island life — a fishing town that's perfect for anyone wanting more than a tourist experience. You'll fly into Praia International Airport (RAI), where the local team picks you up on Sunday and transfers you to your accommodation.

Culture Week

Culture Week in Tarrafal

A week in Cape Verde that moves between real local life and wild, open coastline. You'll be based in Tarrafal — a calm fishing village framed by steep mountains and Atlantic water that barely looks real. The aim is simple: live close to the culture, not as a spectator, but as someone actually in it.

You start with the basics. Settling in, meeting the team, and picking up early Kriolu so you can greet people and follow along. From there the days open up. Village markets. Landmarks with genuine weight. Craft traditions you try with your own hands. Time on the water with local fishermen. Snorkelling included.

And food. You'll learn to cook Cachupa and understand why it matters here.

What You'll Do

– Learn practical Kriolu for everyday conversations
– Cook Cape Verdean dishes in a hands-on class
– Spend time on Tarrafal's beaches
– Visit key historical sites including the Tarrafal concentration camp
– Make local crafts: bracelets, baskets, hats
– Join a pottery workshop and work with clay
– Head out on the water with local fishermen, snorkelling included
– Visit working farms and see how island agriculture operates

Why This Week Exists

– Bring you into Cape Verdean culture through language, food, craft and daily life
– Create real exchange with the community, not surface-level tourism
– Prepare you for the volunteer weeks that follow

How the Week Runs

Monday

Breakfast, then an introduction to how the week works and a short admin session covering the Code of Conduct and program documents. After that you head out on foot: supermarkets, ATMs, the museum, the Tarrafal concentration camp, the local market. Lunch at the center. Later, back at the market for a simple craft session — making bracelets you'll take home.

Tuesday

A beginner Kriolu lesson focused on phrases you'll actually use. Then a traditional pottery workshop — clay work with roots in West and Central African traditions, shaped by the land and the people who've worked it for generations. A visit to Chapel São José. After lunch: artisanal fishing with local fishermen, followed by snorkelling.

Wednesday

The food day. You'll learn to cook Cachupa — not just the recipe, but the feel of it. Another Kriolu session adds useful vocabulary, spelling and everyday phrases.

Thursday

A one-hour Kriolu class focused on building simple sentences. Then a weaving workshop using coconut and palm leaves. Local artisans have been making hats and baskets this way for a long time. You'll learn by doing it.

Friday

Your final Kriolu class, then another trip out with local fishermen. Afterwards, a visit to nearby agricultural fields to see farming shaped by volcanic terrain, steep slopes and scarce water. Resourceful by necessity. You'll also visit the project site where you begin the following Monday, so you arrive next week already comfortable with the setting.

The schedule can be adjusted based on local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Arrival & Airport Pickup

You need to arrive at Praia International Airport (RAI) on Sunday.

Full arrival instructions are provided after acceptance, so please wait to book flights until your place is confirmed.

All arrival details and local contact information are shared in advance to ensure a smooth transition.

A member of the local team will meet you and transfer you to your accommodation, where you’ll meet other volunteers.

Location, Orientation, Accommodation & Meals

Your Base: Tarrafal, Santiago Island

Tarrafal sits on the northwestern coast of Santiago Island, in the northern part of Cape Verde. It's a working fishing port and the seat of the Tarrafal Municipality — named after the Tarrafe plant (Tamarix senegalensis) that grows along the coastline. Small, unhurried, and genuinely beautiful. This is where you'll be based for the duration of your program.

Arrival and Airport Pickup

Your program begins on Sunday. Airport pickup is included and takes place at Praia International Airport (RAI) on Santiago Island. Full arrival instructions and local contact details are sent once your placement is confirmed. Your coordinator will be waiting when you land and will transfer you directly to your accommodation to meet the other volunteers.

Orientation

Orientation takes place on Monday morning and is led by an experienced local coordinator. It covers local culture and customs, health and safety, project expectations and practical information about your accommodation and daily routines. Your program begins in full from Tuesday onwards.

Accommodation

You'll stay in a fully equipped shared house for the duration of your program. Rooms are shared with other volunteers, with gender-segregated arrangements in place. Bathrooms are shared with western-style facilities. The house has WiFi in common areas, lockable rooms, hot showers, fans and bed linen provided.

What's included in your room:

– All meals included (three meals weekdays, two meals weekends)
– Tea and coffee available
– 4–8 persons per room
– WiFi in common areas
– Lockable rooms
– Hot shower
– Bed linen provided
– Fan

Towels, air conditioning, laundry facilities, safety box and private bathrooms are not available. Bring your own towel.

Meals

Three meals a day are provided Monday to Friday — breakfast, lunch and dinner. On weekends, two meals are included: brunch and dinner. Food is a mix of local Cape Verdean dishes and familiar Western options. Dietary requirements are accommodated — let us know in advance.

Facilities in Tarrafal

The town center has ATMs, mini-marts, small shops and restaurants within easy reach of the accommodation.

Beaches and Surroundings

Tarrafal's beaches are genuinely worth your weekends. Clear water, wide stretches of sand, traditional fishing boats and very few crowds. Pack a towel, sunscreen and flip-flops. Snorkelling and surfing are both possible from the beach. If you're spending a full day out there, bring snacks and extra water — restaurants are nearby but it's good to be prepared.

Close to the beach you'll also find the Resistance Museum, which holds some of the more significant chapters of Cape Verde's history and is worth a couple of hours of your time.

Cape Verde vs Other Medical Internships Abroad

Cape Verde is a strong option if you want a medical internship abroad that is closer to Europe than many Asia or Latin America placements, but still gives you exposure to healthcare in a different cultural and community setting.

  • Compared with Asia: Cape Verde can be simpler for UK and European students who want to avoid long-haul routes or Middle East connections.
  • Compared with mainland Africa: Cape Verde offers an island-based placement with a smaller, community-focused healthcare setting.
  • Compared with Europe: Cape Verde offers a different global health context while still being relatively accessible from Europe.

Who This Internship Is Not For

  • Complete beginners with no healthcare background
  • Students looking for unsupervised hands-on clinical work
  • Anyone expecting to replace local medical staff
  • Participants unwilling to follow patient confidentiality and local professional standards

For UK and European Healthcare Students

This Cape Verde medical internship may suit UK and European medical, nursing and healthcare students looking for a short-to-medium-haul placement abroad. It is especially relevant if you want international experience, cultural immersion and a supervised healthcare setting without committing to a long-haul Asia or Latin America route.
