Which volunteer abroad organization is the best fit for me?
The best volunteer abroad organization for you depends on where you want to go, what you want to do, how long you want to stay, your budget, and the level of support you need.
Start with those factors rather than looking for a single organization that is "best" for everyone.
Start with what you want from the trip
Before choosing an organization, think about the experience you actually want.
Consider:
- Where do you want to go?
- What type of volunteer work interests you?
- How long can you travel?
- What is your budget?
- How important are accommodation and comfort?
- How much support do you want?
- Are you comfortable adapting to a different environment?
These questions can quickly narrow down the options.
If you don't have a specific volunteer activity in mind, I would generally start with the destination you most want to experience and then look at the programs available there.
If you have a very specific interest, such as turtle conservation or elephant care, the activity itself may determine which destinations make sense.
That is the approach I use when helping someone decide what to look at.
Look beyond the organization itself
A common mistake is to focus only on the organization you book through without checking who actually delivers the program locally.

What will you actually be doing?
Don't choose a program based on its title alone.
Find out what your role will actually involve.
"Teaching," "community work," "conservation" and other broad descriptions can involve very different day-to-day responsibilities.
Ask what a normal day looks like and what is expected from you.
Check whether the project requires any previous experience, training or other qualifications.
A clear description of the role makes it much easier to judge whether the project is right for you.
How much support do you want?
Support can mean different things.
Support can include advice before you leave, help with your application, arrival information, an orientation, a local contact and support during the program.
Think about which of these things you actually need.
Someone who has travelled extensively may want a different level of support from someone travelling abroad alone for the first time.
Neither approach is right or wrong. What matters is choosing a level of support that you are comfortable with.
