What is the History of Abroad Escape?
Abroad Escape's history in volunteer travel begins in 2006, when we launched GapXperience — one of the earliest volunteer and gap year placement agencies in Europe, connecting students and young travellers with structured programs across Asia, Africa and South America. For 14 years, our volunteers trusted GapXperience with their placements abroad.
In 2020, Covid forced every travel organisation in the world to close. We were no exception. But we never stopped believing in what we do.
We rebuilt as Beyond Volunteer — restoring our programs, our local teams, and our standards from the ground up. In June 2023, we restructured as Abroad Escape Ltd: a stronger UK-registered entity with sharper ethical placement standards, transparent pricing, and a clearer focus on structured volunteer experiences that serve genuine community needs rather than tourist demand.
The local partnerships, coordinator networks, and project relationships built across nearly two decades carried directly into Abroad Escape. When you book with us, you are booking with a team that has been placing volunteers abroad since volunteer travel was a new idea.
Who Volunteers with Abroad Escape?
Our programs are open to adults aged 18 and over. The majority of our volunteers are students, gap year travellers, and young professionals between 18 and 29, though a significant proportion of our participants are career breakers, retirees, and professionals over 30 who want a meaningful use of extended time abroad.
We do not require previous volunteer experience. We do require a genuine commitment to the role you are placed in, a willingness to operate within a structured environment, and — for specialist roles — relevant qualifications.
