Volunteer Placement

Volunteers work as assistants to professional teaching staff in local childcare centers across Lisbon. Your role is to provide consistent support during the critical early years of development. Daily tasks include assisting with classroom management, helping during meal and nap times, and leading small-group activities.

A significant portion of the role involves introducing basic English phrases through interactive methods such as storytelling, music, and art. This is a collaborative environment where you are expected to bring initiative to lesson planning while following the established curriculum. Your presence allows for more individualized attention for the children, ensuring a higher standard of care and engagement.

Aims & Objectives

  • To deliver basic English language exposure through interactive, age-appropriate activities.

Project Location, Accommodation & Meals

Location

Lisbon is the administrative and cultural center of Portugal. While known for its historical landmarks and architectural diversity, the city also faces a significant demand for structured childcare services. This placement allows volunteers to see the reality of the Portuguese education system from the inside, operating within local neighborhoods that reflect the city's authentic daily life, distinct from the standard tourist districts.

Accommodation & Meals

Participants stay in a professionally managed hostel in Lisbon on a shared basis. The living arrangements are designed for safety and communal support.

  • Facilities: Shared, gender-separate rooms (4–10 people). The accommodation provides Wi-Fi in public areas, and bed linen.

  • Meals: The program includes three traditional meals per day from Monday to Friday. On weekends, breakfast is provided, allowing volunteers to explore Lisbon's local food scene for lunch and dinner. Purified drinking water, coffee, and tea are available at the center.

  • Practicalities: ATMs, supermarkets, and pharmacies are within walking distance. Laundry services are available locally at an additional cost. Note that participants must bring their own towels.

Arrival & Orientation

All volunteers arrive on Sunday at Lisbon International Airport (LIS) between 06:30 and 23:59. A coordinated pickup service is provided to ensure a safe transfer to the accommodation.

Monday is dedicated to a structured orientation. This induction is a mandatory requirement designed to prepare you for the placement through safety briefings, an introduction to the local education system, and cultural training. You will receive your specific syllabus guidance and meet the local coordinators who provide 24/7 support. This preparation ensures that every participant enters the childcare center with a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the professional standards expected of them.
