Volunteer Food Waste and Community Support in Lisbon Portugal

Volunteers are integrated into the daily operations of local food shops and community kitchens. The work is logistical and hands-on; your primary responsibilities include sorting surplus food, preparing nutritional baskets, and assembling meals for distribution. You will also assist in serving these meals to the community and maintaining a clean, professional kitchen environment.

Strict adherence to hygiene protocols is mandatory. This includes wearing hairnets, frequent handwashing, and following the guidance of local coordinators to ensure the food provided meets safety standards. This role requires flexibility and a collaborative mindset, as you will be working closely with local staff to respond to the community's needs in real-time.

Aims & Objectives

• To reduce urban food waste by redirecting high-quality surplus to the community.

• To support local staff in providing hygienic, healthy food to vulnerable populations.

• To provide consistent meal security for families and individuals in the Lisbon area.

Weekly Schedule

• Monday to Friday:

  • 08:00: Breakfast at the accommodation.

  • 09:00: Commute to the placement site to begin operations.

  • 09:30 – 13:00: Assist with food basket preparation, kitchen duties, and site maintenance.

  • 13:00 – 14:00: Lunch break.

  • 14:00 – 17:00: Meal assembly, food collection from partners, or direct distribution to families.

  • 19:00: Dinner at the accommodation.

• Weekends: Free time for personal exploration. Breakfast is provided on Saturday and Sunday.

This schedule can be changed and/or amended depending on weather conditions, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.

Location

Lisbon is a city where historical infrastructure meets modern social challenges. While it is a major economic hub, there is a rising demand for food security and social support services. The project operates in functional community spaces within the city, providing volunteers with a realistic perspective on Lisbon’s social challenges and the resilience of its local support networks.

Accommodation & Meals

Participants stay in a central Lisbon hostel on a shared basis. The environment is professional, secure, and designed for communal living.

• Facilities: Shared, gender-separate rooms (4–10 people) equipped with air conditioning and Wi-Fi in common areas. The facility features hot showers and lockable rooms for security.

• Meals: Three traditional meals are provided daily from Monday to Friday. On weekends, only breakfast is provided, giving participants the chance to explore the local area. Drinking water, coffee, and tea are available.

• Practicalities: ATMs, supermarkets, and pharmacies are all within walking distance. Laundry services are available locally at an additional cost. Please note that towels are not provided.

All volunteers arrive on Sunday at Lisbon International Airport (LIS) between 06:30 and 23:59. A coordinated pickup service is provided to ensure a safe transfer to the accommodation.

Monday is dedicated to a structured orientation. This induction is a mandatory requirement designed to prepare you for the placement through safety briefings, an introduction to the local education system, and cultural training. You will receive your specific syllabus guidance and meet the local coordinators who provide 24/7 support. This preparation ensures that every participant enters the childcare center with a clear understanding of their responsibilities and the professional standards expected of them.
