Immersion Volunteer Programs in Bali

Volunteer in Bali through well-established projects with local coordination, clear expectations, and time to explore the island alongside meaningful work.

Programs are based in Ubud, Lovina (North Bali), and Nusa Penida.

Explore the options first.
Apply once you know Bali is right for you.

Is Bali right for you?

Bali tends to work well if you:

  • Are interested in education, childcare, community, healthcare, or environmental projects

  • Are open-minded and adaptable

  • Are comfortable with shared accommodation and local routines

  • Want structure and support, not a DIY backpacking trip

Bali may not be the right fit if you’re looking for:

  • Luxury travel or resort holidays

  • Instant booking with no preparation

  • Complete independence with no structure

Where you’ll be based

Ubud
The main volunteer base with the largest volunteer house and the widest range of projects. Best if you want choice, structure, and a strong volunteer community.

Lovina (North Bali)
A quieter, more local setting. Best if you want a slower pace and closer community interaction.

Nusa Penida
A small island off the coast of Bali. Best for volunteers focused on turtle conservation and sustainability.

All Bali programs are paid volunteer programs and include accommodation, meals, local support, and coordination.

Most volunteers:
– Volunteer 4–6 hours per day, Monday to Friday
– Have free time in the afternoons
– Have weekends free for travel or rest

Projects can be combined week by week, depending on availability.

More info

We partner with over 15 kindergartens in the area, plus we run our own where kids can attend for free. These children are just starting their school journey, and giving them some early English exposure, can genuinely change their opportunities in life.

You’ll be playing games, singing, drawing, painting, maybe heading outside when the weather’s good. The kids want to play with you, and that’s exactly how they learn best at this age. Bring your energy and patience because every kid learns differently.

You’ll also help the teachers with day-to-day stuff – organizing activities, playing games, sometimes practical things like helping at meal times or getting them ready for the day.

Typically, you will be working at the kindergarten in the morning hours.
After lunch, you will have time to plan and organize activities for the next day.

You’ll teach English using interactive methods such as games, music, art, and conversation. Lessons are prepared with support from local staff, and creativity is encouraged.

More info

You’ll teach in local elementary or high schools, either independently or with other participants. A general syllabus is provided, but you can adapt lessons to your style and the students’ needs.

These kids are genuinely excited to learn, which makes teaching them pretty incredible. There’s a general syllabus to follow and examples from past participants, but you’ve got freedom to decide what and how you teach. Make it fun – use games, songs, art, sports, music, whatever gets them engaged.

Your job is to show them that learning English doesn’t have to be boring. Get creative with it. If you’re nervous about teaching, pair up with other participants. Having two or three teachers in the classroom actually works really well, especially when the kids’ enthusiasm turns into full-on excitement.

Bring your energy, patience, and creativity. If you genuinely care about making a difference for these kids, they’ll feel it. And honestly, you’ll probably learn just as much from them as they learn from you.

Schedule

More info

The kids are anywhere from 5 to 12 years old, and they get taught different English-based subjects, but it’s all done in this playful, fun way.

You can either team up with another participant to teach a class together, or if you’re feeling confident, you can go solo. Most people usually teach with one other person though.

So you’re looking at classes with around 25 kids. They’re bright and cheerful, but – and let’s be honest about this – they’d rather be playing than sitting in class, which, I mean, fair enough.

You’re basically gonna be surrounded by children Monday through Friday, so you’ve gotta actually care about them and understand how they work. Plus, you obviously need to speak English at a decent level to pull this off.

There’s a local coordinator there guiding you through everything and showing you how to do stuff properly, plus you’ve got other participants and locals working alongside you, which makes the whole vibe way more collaborative.

Now, the physical side of things – yeah, it’s legit hard work. You’ll be laying bricks, doing carpentry, painting, laying tiles, getting your hands messy with landscaping and gardening. Some of the work’s more relaxed and artistic – you might find yourself painting murals or doing drawings in kindergartens and primary schools around Lovina. It’s different from the heavy construction stuff, you know?

Turtle Conservation in Nusa Penida (45-minute speedboat from Bali)

You’ll work directly at a local turtle conservation centre supporting the protection and rehabilitation of endangered sea turtles. Tasks vary depending on the season, turtle activity, and conservation needs at the time of your stay.

More info

This project is based in Nusa Penida, one of Indonesia’s important turtle conservation areas. Indonesia’s coastline is home to several turtle species, including green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, olive ridley turtles, loggerhead turtles, and leatherback turtles.

You will be part of a local team at the conservation center and do important conservation work.

The coast of Indonesia is home to olive ridley turtles, green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, loggerhead turtles, and leatherback turtles. The beaches of Java, Bali, Sumatra, and Papua are important nesting sites where females come ashore to lay their eggs.

However, these turtles face serious threats, including habitat destruction due to coastal development, pollution, climate change, illegal poaching for their meat and shells, and entanglement in fishing nets.

Sea turtles face serious threats such as coastal development, pollution, climate change, illegal poaching, and entanglement in fishing nets.

This project was launched in 2013 and works closely with the local community. Community involvement has significantly reduced turtle poaching and increased long-term protection of nesting beaches.

The main goal of the project is to protect sea turtles and their habitats by:

  • Operating protected hatcheries

  • Treating injured turtles

  • Cleaning beaches and reducing pollution

  • Collecting data on turtle health and development

  • Supporting environmental education and awareness

Depending on the time of year, you may assist with:

  • Feeding turtles and cleaning pools

  • Preparing live food and seaweed

  • Monitoring nests and hatchlings (seasonal)

  • Treating injured turtles under guidance

  • Cleaning beaches and surrounding areas

  • Supporting small construction or maintenance tasks at the centre

  • Collecting basic data such as shell length, weight, and flipper size

Turtle nesting and hatching do not happen year-round, so activities change with the seasons.

If you join this project after completing a program in Ubud, transport to Nusa Penida is not included, but the local coordinator will assist with arrangements.

Schedule

Monday

Arrival, Orientation, Accommodation & Meals

Your Arrival

Airport pickup is arranged on Sunday from Denpasar International Airport (DPS). Full arrival instructions are provided after acceptance, so please wait to book flights until your place is confirmed.

If you are already in Bali before Sunday, we can arrange pickup from one of the designated meeting points. All arrival details and local contact information are shared in advance to ensure a smooth transition.

A member of the local team will meet you and transfer you to your accommodation, where you’ll meet other volunteers.

Your Orientation

Orientation takes place on Monday and is led by an experienced local coordinator.

It covers:

  • local culture and customs

  • health and safety information

  • program expectations and daily routines

  • practical information about your placement and accommodation

This session helps you settle in, understand how things work locally, and feel prepared before starting your project.

Orientation is led by an experienced local coordination team who manage placements, accommodation, and day-to-day support in Bali.

These programs are supported by established on-the-ground teams we have worked with for many years. Our primary long-term coordination partner is The Green Lion, allowing us to prepare participants clearly before arrival and ensure consistent support throughout their stay.

Your Accommodation & Meals

Accommodation is included from Sunday night to Saturday morning of your final week.

You’ll stay in shared accommodation with other volunteers in single-gender dorm-style rooms. This setup allows you to connect with other participants while maintaining comfort and privacy. WiFi is available at the accommodation.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions Bali

When should I apply?
We recommend applying as early as possible, as placements are limited, especially during peak travel periods. You can apply up to one year in advance. Late applications may be accepted up to three weeks before the start date, subject to availability.

How does airport pickup work?
Airport pickup is included and arranged on the designated arrival day for each destination. Full arrival instructions and local contact details are provided after acceptance. If you arrive earlier, a meeting point or alternative pickup can usually be arranged.

Can I volunteer with a friend, partner, or group?
Yes. You can apply together with a friend or partner by mentioning this in the application form. Group or family applications can also be organised on request.

How long does the application process take?
Once you submit your application, we review it promptly. In most cases, you will receive a response within 1–2 days, depending on availability and project requirements.

Is volunteering abroad free?
No. These are paid volunteer programs. Program fees contribute to accommodation, meals (where included), local coordination, orientation, and placement organisation. Full details are provided before any payment is requested.

How many hours per day will I volunteer?
Most volunteers work around 4–6 hours per day, Monday to Friday, depending on the project. Weekends are generally free for travel, rest, or exploration.

Do I need experience or qualifications?
Most programs do not require prior experience. Some specialised projects (for example, healthcare-related placements) may require relevant background or documentation. This is always confirmed before acceptance.

Can I receive a certificate after the program?
Yes. A certificate of participation can be provided upon request after successful completion of your program.
