Our programs are supported by established local coordinators who live in their communities year-round. These are the faces that will greet you at the airport, lead your orientation, and support you every day of your placement.

  • Local Leadership: Our coordinators are local community leaders. They provide the "Ground Truth" and cultural insight that makes your stay authentic.

  • 24/7 Safety Net: Whether you need help navigating a local market or require medical assistance, our team is always available.

  • A Proven Alliance: We have worked alongside our on-the-ground partners, The Green Lion, for over 15 years. This deep connection ensures that our standards for safety, accommodation, and impact are consistent across every project.

Meet your local coordinators in Bali.

Why Join Abroad Escape?

20 years of experience. One dedicated alliance. Real impact.

20 Years Experience

We don’t guess, and we don’t outsource to strangers. With over two decades of experience in international volunteering, we provide the structure and "Mission Control" you need to travel with total confidence.

We’ve spent 20 years refining our programs so that what you see on our website is exactly what you find on the ground.

Impact

We focus on long-term benefits, not "volunteer-tourism" for show. Our projects in Bali are permanent community fixtures—from local schools to wildlife conservation centers.

We work directly with the community to ensure your contribution provides a genuine, lasting impact where it is needed most.

Support

You are never on your own. For over 15 years, we have worked exclusively with The Green Lion, Bali’s pioneers in ethical operations.

This deep-rooted alliance means you get the personal support of our UK team combined with a massive, established safety net of local coordinators, secure housing, and 24/7 assistance.

Our Projects in Bali

You can choose which project you want to join week by week and create your own schedule from 1 to 8 weeks.
If you combine different locations, travel costs between locations are not included.

In Bali we have three locations: Ubud, Lovina and Nusa Penida. Ubud and Lovina are on the mainland of Bali and the island of Nusa Penida is just off the coast of Bali

We strongly recommend starting with the Culture Week, especially if it’s your first time in Bali. This helps with cultural adjustment and preparation before starting a project.

The Bali Culture Week

The Recommended Way to Start

The Reality of Arrival Most volunteers arrive in Bali feeling a mix of excitement and "culture shock." The heat, the pace, and the customs are often very different from home. We strongly recommend starting your journey with our Culture Week in Ubud.

What Happens During Culture Week This is a social, low-pressure introduction designed to turn "tourists" into "team members." Instead of diving straight into a project, you’ll spend your first five days:

  • Exploring Hidden Bali: Visit sacred temples and local markets with our coordinators.

  • Cultural Immersion: Take classes in basic Bahasa Indonesian and traditional Balinese dance or batik painting.

  • Daily Life Skills: Learn how to navigate local transport, understand temple etiquette, and master the "dos and don’ts" of Balinese society.

Our Expert Recommendation While it is 100% your choice to skip this and go straight into a project on week one, we find that volunteers who take the Culture Week hit the ground running. You’ll start your actual project with more confidence, a deeper understanding of the people you are helping, and a established group of new friends to spend your weekends with.

The Bali Culture Week

Master the essentials of Balinese life while building a community of fellow volunteers.

Front Summary Before you start your project, take a week to truly understand the "Island of the Gods." From language lessons and temple visits to traditional cooking, this is the ultimate orientation designed to prepare you for your volunteer journey and introduce you to your new team.

We partner with over 15 kindergartens in the area, plus we run our own where kids can attend for free. These children are just starting their school journey, and giving them some early English exposure, can genuinely change their opportunities in life.

You'll be playing games, singing, drawing, painting, maybe heading outside when the weather's good. The kids want to play with you, and that's exactly how they learn best at this age. Bring your energy and patience because every kid learns differently.

You'll also help the teachers with day-to-day stuff – organizing activities, playing games, sometimes practical things like helping at meal times or getting them ready for the day.

Schedule

Monday to Friday

Typically, you will be working at the kindergarten in the morning hours.
After lunch, you will have time to plan and organize activities for the next day.

On a typical day during the project, you will have an early morning breakfast and leave to work at the kindergarten where you will teach some basic English phrases for little kids, play some games, etc.

Then, once you have lunch in the afternoon, you will start planning the activities for the next day at kindergarten.

You’ll teach in local elementary or high schools, either independently or with other participants. A general syllabus is provided, but you can adapt lessons to your style and the students’ needs.

These kids are genuinely excited to learn, which makes teaching them pretty incredible. There's a general syllabus to follow and examples from past participants, but you've got freedom to decide what and how you teach. Make it fun – use games, songs, art, sports, music, whatever gets them engaged.

Your job is to show them that learning English doesn't have to be boring. Get creative with it. If you're nervous about teaching, pair up with other participants. Having two or three teachers in the classroom actually works really well, especially when the kids' enthusiasm turns into full-on excitement.

Bring your energy, patience, and creativity. If you genuinely care about making a difference for these kids, they'll feel it. And honestly, you'll probably learn just as much from them as they learn from you.

Schedule

Monday
On Monday after early morning breakfast, the lesson plans are drawn. This will consist of preparing lessons which could be on various educational subjects or something you would like to teach the children.
After lunch, you would set out to the local school and teach them the lessons which you are already prepared with. Later in the evening, return back to the center to give us your feedback on your first day of teaching.

Tuesday to Friday
From Tuesday to Friday, after you complete your early morning breakfast, you can work on developing lesson plans for each day for a couple of hours.
After lunch, you can then leave to your assigned school to work with the students who will be eagerly waiting for you.

The kids are anywhere from 5 to 12 years old, and they get taught different English-based subjects, but it's all done in this playful, fun way.

You can either team up with another participant to teach a class together, or if you're feeling confident, you can go solo. Most people usually teach with one other person though.

So you're looking at classes with around 25 kids. They're bright and cheerful, but – and let's be honest about this – they'd rather be playing than sitting in class, which, I mean, fair enough.

You're basically gonna be surrounded by children Monday through Friday, so you've gotta actually care about them and understand how they work. Plus, you obviously need to speak English at a decent level to pull this off.

Schedule

Monday
Typically, you will be working at the kindergarten in the morning hours. After lunch, you will have time to plan and organize activities for the next day.

On Monday, after breakfast, you will prepare lesson plans for your first day of teaching at the local school. After you are ready for the new program, you will then have lunch and set out for your placement. At the local school, you will be meeting many children coming from various backgrounds and they will definitely make all your efforts worth it. Once you complete your first day, you can then come back and attend a meeting where you will be sharing your feedback regarding your new experience.

Tuesday to Wednesday
During these two days, you will prepare lesson plans after breakfast and leave for school after lunch. Now that you are accustomed to the school setting, you will be able to work closely with children and improve their education level. After your program, you will come back to the Center to have dinner.

Thursday
Today after breakfast, you will start preparing lessons to be taught at school in the afternoon. After lunch, you will attend the teaching program at school. However, Thursday evening would be special as there would be a special welcome and goodbye dinner organized at the accommodation.

Friday
On Friday, you will have an early morning breakfast and start preparing the lessons to teach at the local school. Once you prepare all the relevant lessons for the day, you can then set out to the local school and start teaching what you have prepared.

You're working with local families and their kids, giving them better spaces to live and learn in. And you're not doing it alone either. There's a local coordinator there guiding you through everything and showing you how to do stuff properly, plus you've got other participants and locals working alongside you, which makes the whole vibe way more collaborative.

Now, the physical side of things – yeah, it's legit hard work. You'll be laying bricks, doing carpentry, painting, laying tiles, getting your hands messy with landscaping and gardening. That's the meat of it. But here's the cool part: there's also this whole creative angle to it. Some of the work's more relaxed and artistic – you might find yourself painting murals or doing drawings in kindergartens and primary schools around Lovina. It's different from the heavy construction stuff, you know?

So what actually happens on these projects? You could be painting school buildings, building tables and chairs, constructing and fixing up playgrounds, making pathways, building toilets, repairing school walls, or helping to create new classrooms. And it's not just schools – sometimes you're also doing renovation work on community centres or local residents' houses depending on what needs doing in the area.

Look, the whole thing's actually pretty fun. People genuinely encourage you to bring your own ideas and creativity to the table, which keeps things interesting. Plus, you're part of something that matters – you and everyone else involved are literally building and renovating safe, solid spaces for the community. That's the draw right there.

Schedule

Monday

This project is based in Nusa Penida, one of Indonesia’s important turtle conservation areas. Indonesia’s coastline is home to several turtle species, including green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, olive ridley turtles, loggerhead turtles, and leatherback turtles.

You will be part of a local team at the conservation center and do important conservation work.

The coast of Indonesia is home to olive ridley turtles, green sea turtles, hawksbill turtles, loggerhead turtles, and leatherback turtles. The beaches of Java, Bali, Sumatra, and Papua are important nesting sites where females come ashore to lay their eggs.

However, these turtles face serious threats, including habitat destruction due to coastal development, pollution, climate change, illegal poaching for their meat and shells, and entanglement in fishing nets.

Sea turtles face serious threats such as coastal development, pollution, climate change, illegal poaching, and entanglement in fishing nets.

This project was launched in 2013 and works closely with the local community. Community involvement has significantly reduced turtle poaching and increased long-term protection of nesting beaches.

The main goal of the project is to protect sea turtles and their habitats by:

  • Operating protected hatcheries

  • Treating injured turtles

  • Cleaning beaches and reducing pollution

  • Collecting data on turtle health and development

  • Supporting environmental education and awareness

Depending on the time of year, you may assist with:

  • Feeding turtles and cleaning pools

  • Preparing live food and seaweed

  • Monitoring nests and hatchlings (seasonal)

  • Treating injured turtles under guidance

  • Cleaning beaches and surrounding areas

  • Supporting small construction or maintenance tasks at the centre

  • Collecting basic data such as shell length, weight, and flipper size

Turtle nesting and hatching do not happen year-round, so activities change with the seasons.

If you join this project after completing a program in Ubud, transport to Nusa Penida is not included, but the local coordinator will assist with arrangements.

Schedule

Monday
After breakfast, you will receive a presentation about the turtle conservation project and a briefing on the project so that you understand the rules of conduct.

Thursday
On Thursday, you will have breakfast and then start cleaning the pools, feeding the turtles, and collecting seaweed. You will also make toys for the turtles and provide medical care for injured turtles, if any.

Friday
On Friday, after breakfast, you will feed the turtles and have the unique opportunity to release turtles into the sea. Please note, however, that this opportunity is only available if you are leaving the program this week. If you are participating in the project for another week, you will take part in the regular activities at the turtle conservation center.

Other activities include cleaning the beach, making trash cans for the surrounding area, organizing a turtle/environmental campaign for the surrounding area, releasing injured turtles after treatment and cleaning the beach, as well as construction work at the turtle site, e.g., additional turtle pools or walls, painting the walls, etc. as well as collecting information about the turtles, such as the length of their shells, the size of their flippers, checking their weight, etc.
