Hainan Island
If you love teaching and working with children, this community teaching program in China is perfect for you. With a shortage of English teachers, local schools need your help. You’ll teach conversational English to children aged 5 to 12 in kindergartens or primary schools, making a real impact. This is a great opportunity to share your language skills, introduce students to life beyond China, and immerse yourself in a rich cultural experience.
Hainan is a beautiful destination with stunning scenery, rich history, and vibrant local culture. This program offers you the chance to immerse yourself in the community while making a meaningful impact on children’s education. You’ll help local students improve their English skills and gain exposure to different cultures.
With the rapid development of Hainan province, education has become increasingly important. However, in Meimei Village, there remains a shortage of English teachers, as well as educators in Art, Music, and Science.
You’ll be teaching at a kindergarten or primary school located either in the village or the nearest town, working with students aged 3 to 12. These children are naturally curious and eager to learn from you. Since many have never traveled beyond the island, introducing yourself and sharing stories about your home country can be a great way to build friendships and broaden their horizons.
Your role will involve helping students with basic English exercises, singing songs, playing educational games, and leading activities such as arts and crafts, sports, drawing, and writing. By assisting local teachers, you’ll help bring English to life and make learning more engaging and enjoyable for the children.
Beyond teaching, this program offers a deep dive into traditional rural life. You’ll gain firsthand insight into local culture and daily activities while contributing to the community.
About Meimei Village
Meimei Village dates back to the Yuan and Ming Dynasties and is located just 20 minutes by car from an ancient volcanic site. The village
is known for its unique volcanic rock architecture, with courtyard walls and pathways built from volcanic stones. The locals are warm and hospitable, with many excelling in volleyball and climbing coconut trees. The area is rich in tropical fruit trees, including papaya, coconut, lychee, and jackfruit—meaning you’ll always have fresh fruit at hand!
Additional Learning Opportunities
For participants staying longer than one week, we offer an optional daily two-hour course on Chinese language and cultural insights. Starting from the second week, participants can engage in these lessons outside of their regular teaching hours, ensuring a varied and enriching experience.
Beyond the classroom, you’ll have the chance to explore the village, pick fresh fruit, try traditional cooking, and connect with locals. This program is not just about teaching—it’s a journey of cultural exchange, personal growth, and lasting memories.
