The Cultural Introduction

At our program, we go above and beyond to ensure that interns not only have an incredible placement with a local company/organization, but also have a seamless transition into the local culture and customs. We understand that feeling at home in a new environment is essential for a successful internship experience.

To kickstart this journey, you will start with a 2-day Introduction and Orientation. This will immerse you in the local culture and customs, where interns will have the opportunity to learn about the vibrant local culture, language, and customs.

We believe that by providing this thorough introduction to the local culture and industry, we set our interns up for success. They will enter their internship placements equipped with a deep appreciation for the local customs, a solid understanding of the industry landscape, and the confidence to thrive in the local work environment.

Your Accommodation

Your accommodation is included in your package from Sunday night until Saturday morning of your last week, so you can rest assured that you’ll have a comfortable place to call home throughout your journey.

The accommodation is shared with other participants. A private room upgrade is available at an extra cost, contact us for details.

Meals are included, you will have 3 meals per day from Monday to Friday and 2 meals per day on weekends.

You’ll have the unique chance to observe patients and procedures at one of the oldest and largest hospitals in the region, Teaching Hospital Kandy, known for its rich history and advanced medical practices.

While you expand your knowledge of healthcare systems, medical techniques, and patient care by working closely with experienced hospital staff, you’ll also get the opportunity to explore Sri Lanka’s stunning highlands, home to famous tea plantations.

Why do your medical internship in Kandy?

Kandy’s medical history dates back to the fall of the Kandyan Kingdom in 1815, which introduced Western medicine to the region. Hospitals like the one you’ll be working in have evolved from early military facilities to advanced centers of healthcare. Teaching Hospital Kandy, for example, has ties to the University of Peradeniya and the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), providing hands-on training for medical students and professionals from around the world. It houses over 2,200 beds and covers a vast range of specialties, making it a hub for learning and experience.

What You’ll Do?

As a participant, you’ll primarily observe patient treatments and procedures, shadowing local medical staff in departments that may include everything from general medicine to highly specialized fields like neurology, oncology, or neonatal care. You’ll gain invaluable exposure to tropical diseases, surgical techniques, and various medical practices in a setting that emphasizes real-world learning.

Schedule

Your weekdays will be packed with learning opportunities, as you’ll be working from 8:00 AM to 1:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Depending on the department, your hours may vary, providing a flexible but rigorous schedule.

Requirements

To join this project, you must be a medical student and provide the following four weeks in advance:

1. Detailed CV
2. A certification letter from your university
3. A request letter addressed to Kandy General Hospital
4. Travel insurance certificate

It’s also crucial that you’re mentally and physically prepared for the demands of the program. Participants should have a strong understanding of healthcare principles, a sense of responsibility, and be comfortable working under pressure.

This program is perfect for students and professionals looking to dive into the medical field while experiencing the rich culture and scenic landscapes of Sri Lanka.

Requirements to join:
– Participants need to be minimum 18 years old
– Provide your CV, motivation letter, and qualifications
– An established background in an affiliated field of study
– Participants are required to provide a criminal background check (if unable to obtain a criminal background check, you can provide two character reference letters instead)
– Participants are required to have their own travel insurance
– You need to be able to speak and understand English
