Get ready for a warm welcome to Sri Lanka! Your adventure begins the moment you arrive, with our airport pick-up on Sunday from 05:00 until 20:00 at Bandaranayake International Airport (CMB)

To ensure a smooth transition, we’ll provide you with all the necessary arrival and contact details when you book your program. The local team will be waiting for you, ready to transfer you to your accommodation where you’ll meet fellow volunteers from around the world.

The Cultural Introduction

At our program, we go above and beyond to ensure that interns not only have an incredible placement with a local company/organization, but also have a seamless transition into the local culture and customs. We understand that feeling at home in a new environment is essential for a successful internship experience.

To kickstart this journey, you will start with an Introduction and Orientation. This will immerse you in the local culture and customs, where interns will have the opportunity to learn about the vibrant local culture, language, and customs.

We believe that by providing this thorough introduction to the local culture and industry, we set our interns up for success. They will enter their internship placements equipped with a deep appreciation for the local customs, a solid understanding of the industry landscape, and the confidence to thrive in the local work environment.

Your Accommodation

Your accommodation is included in your package from Sunday night until Saturday morning of your last week, so you can rest assured that you’ll have a comfortable place to call home throughout your journey.

You’ll be staying in shared rooms with other volunteers, giving you the perfect opportunity to make lifelong friends from around the globe. You’ll be accommodated in single-gender dorm-style rooms, ensuring maximum comfort and privacy.

If you want to have a single room, then this is available at an extra cost. There is limited availability for single rooms so please contact us for this.

But that’s not all – we’ve got your meals covered too! You’ll enjoy three delicious meals per day from Monday to Friday, and two meals per day on weekends.

You’ll have the unique chance to observe patients and procedures at one of the oldest and largest hospitals in the region, Teaching Hospital Kandy, known for its rich history and advanced medical practices.

This internship, based at one of Kandy’s largest and oldest hospitals, gives you an inside look at the medical system, techniques, and procedures in Sri Lanka. You’ll have the chance to work alongside experienced hospital staff, gaining hands-on experience as you learn.

After completing your introduction week, you’ll begin assisting a doctor or nurse in the hospital. Typical working hours are Monday to Friday from 8:00 until 13:30, but these may vary based on the department’s needs. Your main responsibilities will include observing and monitoring patients, treatments, and techniques carried out by the local staff.

The hospital is closely connected to the University of Peradeniya and serves as a training hub for undergraduate medical students from the University of Colombo. It regularly hosts postgraduate trainees, registrars, and senior registrars. With over 2,200 beds and a full range of medical and surgical specialties, the hospital also offers teaching opportunities for international students eager to learn about tropical diseases.

On your first day of, you will be taken to your placement by the coordinator and introduced to the staff at the hospital you will be working with.

Your weekdays will be packed with learning opportunities, as you’ll be working from 8:00 until about 13:30 from Monday through Friday. Depending on the department, your hours may vary.
